Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an approach that is primarily applied to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms (e.g., flashback, nightmares), but can additionally be used for a range of other psychological difficulties. I am currently using this approach to treat the impact of single (one off) traumatic events (e.g., a single assault, road traffic accident, witnessing or experiencing a one off adverse event). EMDR encourages bringing to mind the traumatic memory, thoughts and feelings whilst simultaneously stimulating both sides of the brain (bilateral stimulation; e.g., through eye movements). Over a number of sessions, the memory is processed and becomes less painful to recall. Below is a video that explains this approach in more detail.
